Certified ScrumMasters® demonstrate the accomplishment of core Scrum knowledge to employers and are highly-valued across industries since they have verifiable skills. CSM professionals gain access to local groups, networks, and resources available only to Scrum Alliance members.
The Certified ScrumMaster (CSM®) certification is a designation given by Scrum Alliance® to entry-level Scrum practitioners who have completed a CSM course and passed the official exam. It testifies to a professional’s knowledge of Scrum terminologies, principles, and methods, and ability to apply them to real-world projects. Scrum Masters lead project team members in iterative processes to achieve the best results.
The CSM certification is valid for two years. After this period, certification holders must pay a renewal fee and earn Scrum Education Units (SEUs) through continuing education and professional development activities. These requirements ensure that certified Scrum Masters stay updated with the latest practices and principles of the methodology. Simplilearn is an official Registered Education Ally (REA) of the Scrum Alliance.
Becoming a certified Scrum Master involves a combination of education, experience, and skills. Here's a brief explanation of the steps involved:
Step one: Understand the Scrum framework, Agile principles, concepts, and lifecycles.
Step two: Attend the two-day CSM training course by a certified Scrum Alliance training partner like Simplilearn.
Step three: Pass the CSM certification online test conducted by the Scrum Alliance.
To pass the Scrum Master certification test, correctly answer at least 37 of the 50 questions within 60 minutes. Please ensure to check the pass criteria with your training provider during enrollment. Once you pass the Scrum Master certification exam, you must submit a license agreement to the Scrum Alliance and complete your membership profile to receive your Scrum certification.
To pursue the CSM certification, candidates must understand Scrum and Agile methodologies. While no specific prerequisites are required, having some experience working in a project management role or within a Scrum team can be beneficial and is often recommended. That being said, candidates must complete a Certified ScrumMaster® course conducted by a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) and pass the CSM® exam administered by the Scrum Alliance to earn the Scrum certification.
The Scrum Master certification exam is based on the Scrum framework and has 50 multiple-choice questions. The passing score is 74%, or 37 correct answers.
The CSM certification, like the Agile and Scrum certification, enables professionals to enhance their proficiency in Agile and Scrum practices and allows them to be a Scrum Alliance Certified ScrumMaster for two years.
You will have two chances to pass the Scrum certification exam within a 90-day period starting from when you receive your initial welcome email. If you fail the first CSM certification exam, the system will automatically activate your eligibility for the second attempt.

A Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) is a senior scrum master within the Scrum Alliance community who has attained Certified Scrum Trainer status through the Scrum Alliance.
Stringent certification requirements are imposed on a scrum master earning his or her CSTs; all must be active contributors in the Scrum alliance community, typically having co-trained with multiple other CSTs for knowledge transfer and demonstrating a keen understanding of Scrum through multiple years of successful application in professional environments.
Simplilearn trainers go one step further; all of our Scrum Alliance Certified Scrum Masters have both technical and business backgrounds and derive successful training expertise from hundreds of client-site coaching engagements.
Applicants of the Scrum master certification will receive an email from the Scrum Alliance within five business days of the course. After logging in to the Scrum Alliance website:
